why blog?

I love to write. My writing as a kid was typically fiction, though. I found it a lot easier to live inside fictional characters than in my own life. “Talking Animals” was my favourite game to play and my favourite subject to write about.

Now that my life has taken a thousand twists and turns, I sit here recalling the many stories from my own life that would make great posts on Substack. I started sharing stories on Substack this summer just for the sake of writing, however, it has been brought to my attention that having a blog of my own is actually worthwhile.

I'm not hellbent on “getting discovered” or going viral or whatever. But I know I have a passion in my heart that wants to be in the world, and writing on your own website gives you a leg up on search engines because of something called domain authority.

I'm green in the digital marketing world in the sense that I've never successfully built an email list or sold any digital products. But I'd say it's a dark forest green, since I first got into reading and learning about digital marketing when I was the ripe age of 21. Spiritual entrepreneurship was blowing up. MindValley was a brand new baby. They didn't even have a subscription service yet.

The most I did back then was take some courses, watch a lot of motivational speaker videos, and start a (very cringe) Facebook business page called “Jewell of the Psychosoma". Like, no.

I abandoned that page pretty quick. My offer was murky, I had no real holistic health practice, and I was collecting certificates with no real plan. When I look back at those posts, my tone was directive, though I had no life experience to back up what I was saying. It came off self-righteous and patronizing.

Over ten years later, I took the 18-week ICF Life Coaching training and went to some entrepreneurship bootcamps, got a diploma in Horticulture, as well as continuing to learn about digital marketing (and oh, how times have changed!) Sometimes, knowing what you don't know puts a fire under your ass, more than knowing what you know.

I won't make any lofty promises that I'll blog daily. I'm a massage therapy student and learning anatomy and muscle actions is a helluva lotta work. But I won't forget that I have something I want to share, and that I may be a few steps ahead of some people reading this, and that I could make the process less overwhelming for someone out there.

The process of what? Becoming comfortable in your own skin, sharing your unique perspective, connecting more deeply… It's still up in the air what this will become, and I send my thanks for helping it become what it needs to be.

Welcome to the Still Growing club!
